WHO WE ARE!
a.k.a "A Cappella Connection" a.k.a. “The Vocal Federation Chorus”
WHO WE ARE!
- We’re a group of men and women singers of all ages and from all walks of life who love to sing four parts harmony in a unique a cappella style.
- Created in late 1995, the Strathroy Chapter is a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society [Society], Nashville, Tennessee and The Ontario District Barbershop Harmony Society [District], Toronto.
- The Society is the world’s largest a cappella four parts harmony singing organization and has members throughout Canada, the United States and with other affiliates worldwide. Membership in the Society is open to everyone.
- The Society and all the underlying barbershop organizations are not-for-profit organizations.
- Since inception, the Strathroy Chapter’s “Vocal Federation” chorus [24 members at present] and its quartets has been performing and doing service work in Strathroy and surrounding communities. Reading music is certainly an advantage but not a must. We will provide you with several methods of both learning music and improving vocal skills.
- Our annual spring family variety show is our main funds raiser and financially sustains the Chapter.
- We are proud of the annual Christmas Benefit Concerts held to support local charities. Thousands of dollars and large quantities of non-perishable items have been donated to the main beneficiary, The Salvation Army.
- We are also proud of our gifts of song, sheet music and instruments to help educate local school children musically. As well, we contribute to the communities by performing in seniors’ facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, high schools, churches and at various civic events.
- We and about 1,100 other Ontario barbershop harmony style singers are unified in the support of two not-for-profit charitable organizations; the “Harmonize For Speech Fund” [H4S] and “Sing Canada Harmony” [SCH].
- The H4S Fund provides funds for numerous speech related projects and to purchase equipment for hospitals, clinics and treatment centres throughout Ontario, including the London Speech and Language Centre in London for assessing and treating a full range of vocal disorders. A favourite barbershoppers song “We Sing That They Shall Speak” expresses our best wishes to those with speech afflictions.
- SCH; was created to provide financial assistance for educational and training opportunities in singing vocal music performance, vocal music leadership, vocal music administration and vocal music composition, arrangement, adjudication and staging. “SCH” will fund learning opportunities for Canadians, particularly young people, to gain expertise and experience in the field of a cappella vocal music harmony singing in quartets and choruses. The purpose of SCH is very well captured in another favourite that just happens to be barbershoppers motto song, “Keep The Whole World Singing”
- We sing for the betterment of others and believe anyone can be a singer. We can teach you, help you every step of the way and share the fun of making music with people who are passionate about harmony.
- We meet weekly on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Albert and Richmond Streets, Strathroy.
- Visitors are always welcome! And, there’s no pressure to become a member. You can make several repeat visits to help you decide if becoming a part of this great fraternity is for you.
- Come join us for an evening of; ...Fun!...Camaraderie!...Singing!
